Rev. Irvin Coleman, MDiv
Pastor Emeritus
Reverend Irvin Coleman is a native of Ashland, Virginia. He graduated from the John M. Gandy High School. Reverend Coleman was converted and baptized at Brown Grove Baptist Church in Ashland in his early childhood.He realized at the early age of 16 he was divinely called to be a minister of Jesus Christ. Soon, thereafter, he was licensed to preach by the Brown Grove Baptist Church.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Virginia Seminary & College in Lynchburg, Va. He continued his education by attending the Conwell School of Theology at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., where he received his Master of Divinity degree in Theology. Reverend Coleman continued his walk with years of experience in supervisory and managerial positions.
He worked as a community organization worker at the Hanover Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va.; He was a supervisor for the Youth Study Center in Philadelphia, Pa. He was employed by the Camden County Welfare Board in Camden, NJ. as a caseworker. He was a probation/parole officer for the Common Pleas Court of Philadelphia for 32 years, where he retired in March, 2002. Reverend Coleman was called to Pastor First Baptist Church of Glassboro, NJ, in September of 1973.
On May 30, 1997, the church was completely destroyed by an arsonist. God blessed the congregation under the leadership of Reverend Coleman to rebuild a 1.4 million dollar sanctuary and it was dedicated on February 16, 2003.
Reverend Coleman's activities are myriad and include the following: working with youth organizations; former corresponding secretary of the Bethany Baptist Association; former
President, Virginia Seminary/College Alumni Association of Philadelphia.; member of Camden County NAACP; former shop steward of Local 810 of Municipal Employees of Philadelphia.;
member of the Baptist Minister's Conference of Woodbury, New Jersey and vicinity. Upon his retirement in October 2020, he was bestowed with the title of Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist
Church. One of Reverend Coleman's favorite bible verses is Psalms 34:3 “O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together"
